Volunteering

Some tasks are big and some are small.  There are many activities that fit almost any schedule.  The following is a listing of the PTO’s sponsored activities for the school year, with each volunteer opportunity described briefly.  Specific dates for events are subject to change and will be published in the monthly Hoover-Wood School PTO newsletter “The Hawkwire”, and here at the web site.

Personal Shopping Days

Fundraising

Volunteers are needed to arrange a limited number of shopping day events with local businesses.  The time commitment is minimal – just a few phone calls, and sending out reminder notices to parents.

Accounting and Financial Review

PTO Governance

Parents with a background in accounting are needed to advise and if possible assist the PTO with bookkeeping, tax preparation and required filings.  A background in not-for-profits is helpful, but not necessary.

Vision and Hearing Screening

Classroom support

Vision and Hearing Screening is conducted in the spring of each year.  Volunteers are needed as helpers on the day of screening to assist the nurses with this program, and help supervise to ensure a smooth schedule.

Advertising / Newspaper Articles

Communications

This person and/or committee is responsible for publicizing, as needed, PTO sponsored events, fundraisers and meetings via press releases, the local newspapers, BATV, signs, mailings and the HWS newsletter.

Portrait Parents (picture day)

Communications

In the early fall and spring, a day is set up to take individual portraits of every child.  Parents are needed to help supervise and ensure a smooth schedule.

Room Coordinators

Classroom support

Volunteers are needed for each class to assist the teacher in planning and hosting the classroom parties (autumn, winter holiday, end of the year), as well as other activities.  There can be multiple room coordinators for each class.

Safety Committee

Classroom support

Volunteers are needed as parent advisors on school safety issues, to review procedures, and to make recommendations for improvement.

Nutrition

Classroom support

Volunteers are needed to work with the PTO, the administration, and the room parents to create a healthy snack and celebration policy, and to work to communicate and implement that policy.

Printer Cartridge Recycling Program

Fundraising

HWS accepts printer and fax cartridges for recycling.  A company, School Toner  Cartridge Recyclers, drops off a bin to collect the cartridges and provides posters for advertising.  Volunteers are needed to oversee this program and contact local businesses to see if they would like to recycle their empty cartridges through us.

Spirit Committee

Classroom support

This committee works on ways to promote school spirit for the year, and organizes and coordinates sales of spirit wear (tee shirts, sweatshirts, etc. with the HWS logo) during the school year.
